Pathology Laboratory:
Pathology services include both Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. The lab is equipped with state of the art analytic equipment. It is staffed by 3 histotechnologists, 2 medical technologists, 1 pathology technician, 1 medical laboratory technician, and directed by a fulltime urologic pathologist.
In order to help achieve The Urology Group's vision, the Laboratory strives to continually improve patient and physician satisfaction, improve outcomes, and reduce delays in every aspect of care. The Quality Improvement Plan is intended to measure, assess, and improve the quality of service we provide in order to fulfill our mission of providing the best possible care for our patients. The Lab is accredited by the College of American Pathologists.
Anatomic Pathology:
The Anatomic Pathology Laboratory processes approximately 4,000 cases per year. The specimens are predominantly sextant prostate biopsies, and diagnostic accuracy is enhanced by the appropriate utilization of immunohistochemistry (p63 for basal cells and the prostate cancer antibody P504S) in addition to routine quality H&E slides. Other specimens include bladder biopsies, radical orchiectomies for testis cancer, paratesticular masses and coeles and cutaneous genital lesions. Thin-prep methodology is used for urine cytology (approx. 3000 specimens per year), which permits UroVysion FISH testing (approx. 2000 cases per year) for improvement of sensitivity and specificity in the diagnosis of urothelial cancer of the bladder and upper urinary tract.
Clinical Pathology:
Tests performed in the Laboratory include serum PSA (total and free) as a screen for prostate cancer, BUN and creatinine to measure renal function and testosterone, prolactin follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), estradiol and DHEAS04 for the evaluation of male infertility and sexual dysfunction.
